1A - Digital Tech

Foundation Portfolio:
              Preliminary Task:

  • Use of equipment such as the Mac, Photoshop, Internet and Wordpress to create and display my product.
  • No experience using a camera during this period as we used existing images for the task, rather than our own to get to grips with using the Photoshop basics.
  • I had the advantage as I had learned most of these Photoshop skills during my A-Level Photography.
  • Was able to develop new skills in terms of editing, such as the Selective Colour technique which I applied the images on my magazine front cover. However, learning to do this meant the technique became a novelty - I over-used the technique to a point where it no longer looked effective.
  • The Mac offered quick processing of the images, whilst Photoshop allowed me to change and manipulate the images, using tools such as the Levels and Curves to change the appearance and colour of the photo, whilst I learnt about the magnetic lasso tool and the quick mask tool to help me erase the background from the main image.
                      Main Task:
  • The equipment and digital technology I used were fairly similar to what I used during the prelim task, except that I was able to use my own images this time, therefore I required a Digital Camera, a tripod at times, and I also used a Wacom Tablet.
  • I used a professional Nikon camera in the college's Photography studio for the photo-shoot for my magazine. This also involved me using the professional lighting system and the flash to produce high-quality images in comparison to what would normally be produced outside in natural light and using a standard digital camera.
  • I brought in my Wacom Tablet at times during production also as this gave me the advantage of creating much neater, more precise lines when, for example, cutting out the image from the background on Photoshop.
  • Other software on the Mac was more useful for me this time around, as my magazine pages had a lot more to feature inside of them. For example, I had to write the article for the double-page spread, and using Microsoft Word was useful in this sense as I was able to type-up the article beforehand, checking the grammar and spelling, before importing it into the magazine layout, as Photoshop would not be as precise with these checks.
  • Microsoft Powerpoint and Prezi were also important to me in terms of evaluation, as well as research and planning, as it allowed me to present my ideas in a clear and creative way, allowing for easy and quick feedback, allowing me to improve the quality of my work.
  • A USB was also important to me as it allowed me to store and backup all the elements associated with my final products - everything from my planning sheets to the entire photo-shoot - meaning that I didn't have to worry about the work being lost, and I could also work on the project from various locations.
  • My Blackberry Smartphone and emails were also essential to me, as it allowed me to incorporate social networking sites with my evaluation, as I could easily pass on the images of my magazine on to peers and potential target audiences to gain quick responses in terms of feedback.
  • My Photoshop skills further developed during this task in comparison to the prelim task, as I learnt more about image correction as I continued to learn about this in ALevel Photography. In this sense, I was able to apply more filters and effects to the images to create something more conventional to my target audience and genre. I also developed a better understanding of composition, and I used tools such as the grid on both the camera and on Photoshop to follow the rule of thirds in terms of my image cropping.
